More than 30 Years’ Experience…
My name is Vince Cordova and I’d like to tell you a little bit about my more than 30-year career in the auto industry.
My first position back in 1988 was in auto sales in northeast Ohio. Less than a year later I moved to Columbus still working in auto sales in Central Ohio. Within a few years, though, I changed my focus from sales to auto finance, which I was passionate about and which is where I spent the bulk of my career.
Sleazy Car Guys?
There have been many changes in the auto industry over the years. When I first started out, many car dealerships had unscrupulous reputations and if you said you worked as a car salesman, you were considered sleazy before you were even given a chance.
Back then, you as the customer had no information available about the car lot inventory or if a dealership even had the particular make and model you wanted. You didn’t have much information about the specs or the costs so it was a time-consuming process to search for a new vehicle.
Since then, the industry has changed considerably. You can search online for your next vehicle. You can even access the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) of the specific car you’re eyeing and you can find out all the specs about that vehicle before you ever have to step foot onto a car lot.
…you still have to go through the lengthy process of talking to a salesperson, test driving the car you want, discussing the financing and signing a lot of paperwork with a finance manager before you’re handed the keys to your new vehicle.
Many people find this process painful.
What I’ve Learned
By the time many customers reached my desk in the Auto Finance office, they were tired, stressed and a little overwhelmed. And they still had me to deal with!
Rather than make it a painful experience, I knew my priority was to make the customer feel relaxed and comfortable with the information I was sharing with them. There were no high pressure sales tactics to get the customer to sign up for products they didn’t want or need.
But I realized that many customers didn’t even understand what I was offering them.
Two Key Sticking Points
Auto dealerships put great stock in customer satisfaction surveys. Throughout my career, I realized that two key sticking points in these surveys were:
- Working out the deal, and
- Overcoming the timeframe that it takes to get into the finance office
Basically, customers thought the process was long and difficult.
A New Idea was Born
After years of working in Auto Finance from the car dealership perspective, I realized that there was a real need to represent the customer on the other side of the desk.
